Innovative Learning
Arrangements is one of the
research thematic groups within ICO, the Dutch Interuniversity Center for Educational
Research (http://projects.edte.utwente.nl/ico). The
mission of such a groups is to create a place where researchers discuss research
results and research plans, prepare joint grant proposals and joint article
submissions. Both researchers and PhD students participate in these groups. The
groups are coordinated by one or more experienced researchers
The central focus of this
theme or special interest group is the functioning of new learning arrangements that basically are
typified by collaborative, constructivist, and situated characteristics. This
theme explores the question: How can various types of self-directed,
collaborative, and situated learning environments, such as problem-based
learning, case-based learning, project-learning, situated learning, experiential
learning, collaborative learning, and tacit learning, be designed to optimally
facilitate learning and what is their effectiveness? The educational contexts in
which the investigations are conducted vary from classroom educational setting,
to training on the job, to work environments. Within this team there is also
specific attention for new assessment methods that come with innovative learning
arrangements (which gives a relation to Theme Group VI: "Assessment,
evaluation and examination"), for the implementation of new learning arrangements in the school
organisation or at the workplace (which gives a relation to TG V: "Schools
and the social context of education"), and for the role of ICT in realising these
innovative learning arrangements (which gives a relation to TG IV: "Educational
design and development"). The new theme Innovative Learning Arrangements
combines the previous ICO themes "Interactive Learning" and "Active
and self-directed learning" and has taken the ICT component from the former
theme "ICT tools and design".
